Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use the site?
If you wish to sell:
First, you register to give your contact information.
Second, you list the books you are selling, and the prices you are selling
at.
A buyer will then email or phone you if you have the book he wants.
If you wish to buy:
Search for the book you want by class, book title, author, or ISBN. All
resulting sellers would then be listed, so you can choose the price and
condition of the book that you want.
If the book is not listed for sale, you can use the AutoNotify function,
which emails you as soon as the book is available.
How do I edit/remove books that I am selling?
Click on "Edit Books Listed"
How do I change my email address, graduation date?
Click on "Edit Account Info"
I forgot my password! Where can I get it?
Click on "Lost your password" and you will be sent your password.
I want to remove myself from the TextSwap user database. How do I do that?
Go to "Edit Account Info" and set your graduation date to sometime before
this month. Your account would be deleted by the weekend.
Do you charge for your service?
No, not at all! It is completely free.
How are you funded then?
It doesn't cost that much to run such a service. Mostly it is the time
put in to program and market the site. In the future we may accept
paid advertising (or even now... anyone?).
Will our email addresses be sold to outside organizations or junk mailing lists?
Never. The information will be kept private.
How is TextSwap better than newsgroups?
Searching for books on TextSwap is more convenient than on a newsgroup.
With TextSwap, searches can be done by author, book title, course name,
or ISBN. With a newsgroup, the buyer has to plow through each and every post.
In addition, with TextSwap, buyers and sellers can update their account at anytime,
eliminating replies to outdated posts, which proliferates in newsgroups.
Why are you doing this?
TextSwap.com started at the University of Pennsylvania as a free
service because I wasn't too happy with what I got paid when I sold
my used textbooks to the bookstore.
Now, there are over 3000 books listed for sale at UPenn and
TextSwap has become a very convenient way to buy and sell used textbooks.
I hope to have at least as many textbooks listed at your school, so
that the site can be just as useful to you as it is to me.
